Spider veins are dilated capillaries on the skin, resembling spider legs. Sclerotherapy is a medical procedure used to eliminate spider veins with the injection of a solution directly into the vein. Our vein center is a pioneer in Spartanburg for the use of foam sclerotherapy, as the solution is an evolution that has been shown to be highly effective.
A solution is injected through a very fine needle directly into the vein. At this point, the patient may experience mild discomfort and cramping for one to two minutes. The procedure itself takes approximately 30-45 minutes.
The number of veins injected in one session depends on the size and location of the veins, as well as the general medical condition of the patient. Multiple sessions may be needed.
If you notice any of the following side effects, please let us know immediately:
Formation of small ulcers at the injection site
Hyperpigmentation – darkening of the skin
Trapped blood which may require a minor procedure at your follow-up
You should report all medications you are taking, including herbal supplements. If you need to take an antibiotic before sclerotherapy, contact your doctor.
Do not put lotion on your legs before the procedure.
